Carefree Inspiration: A WWBH Story

Okay!! My first WWBH story of the year. (We won't look past that.) ;-)

I admit, not my most energetic or inspired piece, but I'm thinking baby steps, here. I'm hoping to find more submissions next to mine in the Linky to see what it is I could have written. Lol. Let's see what you come up with!

-------

Carefree Inspiration

Monkeybread always knew when he was supposed to be home. Mark had picked him out from the pound when he'd been five years old. Monkey had been three or four, and he was the only dog that had come up to the edge of his kennel and lick Mark through the wire. Mark had been in love and Monkey quickly earned a place in our home, particularly on the back of the couch.

A half hour before the school bus arrived, Monkeybread would start pacing. Every once in a while he would let out a high pitched wine before looking at me sideways with melting brown eyes to make sure he wasn't in trouble, then go back to pacing.

Ten minutes before Mark would walk up the street, that little dog was in the window, the big brown spot that had inspired Mark to name him Monkeybread facing the living room. He would put his wet nose flat on the glass. It was the one time he was allowed. How could I yell at him for wanting Mark home as much as I did?

Then there Mark would come, walking up the street. Monkey would stand up and dance on the back of the couch, unable to control the little yips of excitement. Mark waved from the sidewalk, then ran to the house, his thick backpack bouncing against his young back.

"Hey, Mom!" he called, dropped his bag on the chair, grabbed the leash from the closet and off those two boys went, running around the yard, then down the street, laughing and playing with the carefree spirit that came with being young. Or a dog.

I watched them from the window while I folded laundry, smiling with joy in response to theirs. Freedom like that was so short lived.

I looked at the clothes in my hand. Freedom was about choices, wasn't it? A balance between responsibilities and desires.

The door closed behind me. The clothes could stay stuck inside, I didn't have to. I whistled to Monkey who stopped and perked his ears up when he saw me. He jumped up, all four paws straight down like he always did. He looked at Mark who smiled back, then they both came sprinting up the walk to where I waited to play.

Due to last week's difficulties with the inLinkz and schedules, we are extending this prompt for a week to give everyone a chance to participate. Leanne's revamped it a bit for us. Hooray for second chances. :D

-------------------------

We are re-running last week's prompt in order for everyone to have an opportunity to participate. :) We'll gather all the stories from both weeks and post them all for your reading pleasure next Wednesday. In the meantime check out the stories that birthed from our photo a couple weeks ago. We've got a lot of creative talent in this group!

WWBH Reveal: Climb

Okay, this is a quick one for me! I'm heading out on vacation in just a few hours, but wanted to get a prompt piece in before I go! I will still link the Collaboration Challenge and share the prompt next week, but otherwise I'll be out of touch as I sink my toes into the sand and stare out at the ocean. :D

---------------------

Climb

It's no picnic climbing to the summit of the ice mountain. Being fleet of foot could work against you, as stamina is more important than speed. Many people hit their ceiling of endurance long before they reach the top of the mountain. No bed to sleep in, no table to eat at, just you, the snow, and whatever gear you can carry on your back in the thin, cold air. Best to memorize your favorite Bible verses than carry the weight of the book as you travel to heights only gods should go.

WWBH Snapshot Reveal: What's Evil

It's happening tomorrow!! Flash 500 will be available for free download at Amazon.com!!

I know you're biting your nails in wait, so here's a quick story from this past week's WWBH prompt to help tide you over. :)

-------------------------------

What's Evil

"Evil butter tarts," Lilly muttered. She knotted her fists, pumping her arms in time with her footsteps pounding on the dry boards beneath her feet. The park path wound through a quiet landscape still cowed by winter, not quite ready to trust the turn of slightly warmer days.

The weather never mattered to Lilly. Her mother had told her 'there is no bad weather; only bad clothing.' Lilly had a wardrobe full of running gear for everything short of the extremes, and for those rare days, she had a treadmill folded underneath her bed.

Today, she was running off her mother's butter tarts. She had sworn she would only eat one. One would be plenty after a chicken salad and sweetened water, but they had been talking, and laughing, and before she'd known it, Lilly's mother had leaned over to whisper that she had eaten three. Three!

Shaking her head, Lilly pushed her body onward, forward. She would burn up those extra calories. Another mile or two should do it. Then she could be done for the day and not have to worry about Luke wondering where the paunch in her belly had come from. They were scheduled to look at a couple ballrooms today, trying to chose the event to host their wedding reception. She refused to let two extra butter tarts ruin her chances at marriage. It would not happen.

He would take her away, then. Rescue her from the ever watchful eye of her mother. They were going to have such a lovely honeymoon - three months in the Mediterranean, traveling along the coast at leisure in Luke's family yacht. Maybe then she could relax a little, enjoy the food a little, just rest ...

Until then, though, Lilly would run. If not away from where she really wanted to escape, then away from those darned evil butter tarts.

Flash 500 Ebook Announcement

4 Days to Go!

To what, you ask? There have been a few blogs and posts going on about the anniversary publication of the WWBH posts. Nicole and I collected as many of our favorites as we could hold, which was unfortunately not all the writers or all the stories. We also contacted as many photographers as we could to include the photographs inspiring the prompts. All to put together an anthology featuring stories from the first year of the Writer's Wednesday Blog Hop.

And it's available Friday, May 10th.

That's this Friday if you're curious. We'll start out at Amazon for the first 90 days, then plan to go through Smashwords as well.

Oh, and it's FREE!

Just to let you know.

So be sure to get your Kindles and your Kindle reader apps ready for Friday, when you can add a collection of amazing stories from amazing writers based on some amazing photos.

To entice you some more, here's the cover. (Joshua wants you to know he's the little boy in the far right, bottom corner.)

Beautiful, isn't it?

If you can't tell, we're pretty excited about this publication. :) A big, huge thank you to everyone who has joined in the hop. We can't wait to read all the stories this next year has to bring, and we hope we can thank more writers in this special way and others. :)

And here's a sneak peek of out everyone who has agreed to be a part of our blog hop, and now the ebook.

A to Z: X - Snapshot Reveal

X Marks the Spot - Flash Fiction

This story is in response to Wednesday's prompt post. The required words are in bold and my word count will be at the bottom. You can hop back to the prompt to read more linked up stories, or even to submit your own. :)

-----------------------------------

120912102843X Marks the Spot

"We have been driving forever," Mel huffed, fanning herself with accordion folded brochure from the last rest stop.

"It isn't my fault all the construction has slowed us down." Kyle still had a smile on his face even after days of driving, of going to random GPS locations to get yet another random GPS location.

Melanie had been on board when he'd explained the trip to her, waving a page with a giant letterhead on it, inviting him on the scavenger hunt. Exploring the States. A road trip vacation, just the two of them. A treasure hunt filled with a quantity of dig spots.

Quantity, maybe, but there was no quality to them. Mel closed her eyes to keep from glaring at Kyle. He hadn't known the junk they would find. Each spot held a 'treasure chest' for people to leave something, and then the next set of GPS coordinates. Never mind they replaced the crap they found with cooler stuff - the next person would probably thing they're things were just as junky. What a crock.

Mel knew she was being grumpy, that she wasn't taking this trip in the spirit of things. It was exactly the fun free for all she had been expecting, and it was made worse by the broken AC in the car. But Kyle was enjoying it, and she usually loved spending empty hours with him. What was the dang difference with being in a car?

"Could we just - could we just take a day?" Mel turned sad eyes to her boyfriend who glanced over quickly, then looked again. "Please? We could get a hotel and some beer and watch stupid news and maybe go swimming."

"Tired of the car?" he asked quietly. She nodded. "Listen. The next spot is only about 70 miles away. The GPS says there's a town only a few miles passed it."

"Okay," she muttered. "Why not get some more junk." Kyle's grin was brilliant enough to almost lift her sour mood.

"Who knows this time, Mel? X just might mark the spot."

A to Z: U

Unfortunately, today isn't T-day, since it's Tena's day to post.

And that totally counts for 'U.' Lol.

There are 4 co-hostesses for the Wednesday blog hop. We usually take turns with the weeks to post, but schedules and life often gets in the way, so we also help each other out. Tena's been asking to have her turn, as she's freshly through with a state to state move. So, this week, she has put together our prompt for us all. :D

------------------------------------------

wednesdayhopbutton

YEAH It's my turn this week to take the WWBH wheel (I so wanted to say reigns but I've been using "wheel" so I'll stick with that. It's been a crazy few months for me. as I've mentioned in several of my blogposts, we recently moved from Texas to Arizona. Had quite an adventure on the trip (you know I still don't think I ever wrote on that trip).

Since I was driving one of the vehicles on the our move here, I did not have too many opportunities to really get any good photos. Most of the time when we stopped it was to take care of something gas, food, etc or stopping for the night (by which point we were both pretty well exhausted). I figured that this picture taken on the one that we took during our pre-move trip (what do you call it when your checking a new place out to see if you would want to live there?) back in December of last year would be fitting.

120912102843

As for the words, I know I could go online and find something that gives me random words, but I just used the dictionary and the old close eyes and point - that's the word (times 5) that I use. I do not pre-plan in anyway the words I choose... Whatever 5 words I point at, that's what goes in - HONEST!!

So this weeks words are:

Letterhead

Quantity

Construction

Huff

Crock

You got about a week to write your story and submit it below (see the blue froggy) 500 words or less using the 5 words and based on the photo above.... Can't wait to see what you all got. so get those creative juices and may the MUSE be with you.

Good Luck.

A to Z: O

Outraged and Devastated

Leanne Sype suggested the prompt we put together this week be in honor of Boston. To be honest, I loved the idea, but I was not going to do it because everything I read made me cry and I didn't think I could do it. Until I saw this.

It corresponds with what I read a few days ago, a quote by Fred Rogers that says, "When I was a boy and would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.'"

So, I will put together a post with that in mind. I have found a lovely photo, though I believe it was taken before the bombings, it is open to many interpretations, not just for the marathon.

But first, some happier news. We have chosen the winner of our $25 Amazon Gift Card. Congratulations to

We are so thankful to each person who participates in our weekly prompt. Please keep coming back, or write for the first time! We welcome everyone and can't wait to read all the stories like the ones from last week.

Mystery Man by Quinn Nielsen
After the Gala by Scott Taylor
A Grand Surprise by Leanne Sype

Now, quickly into the prompt. We'll start with the rules.

1) Use the photo and the 5 words provided in your story.
2) Keep your word count 500 words or less.
3) You have until Tuesday to link up your post.4) Link up with your blog hostess (Nicole, Carrie, Tena or Leanne) when you’re done via the inLinkz linky below.
5) Have fun, don’t stress, let those creative juices flow.

The Words:

Threat

Vitamins

Summer

Quarry

Eating

Sometimes I feel like I should take a screen shot of the creativity games site I use to generate those words, just to prove they were randomly selected by the internet.

But enough of that, it's time to get writing. Make sure to link up below so we can all share in your talent. :)

A to Z: I - Post Two: 1 Year Anniversary Snapshot Prompt

Incredible - It's been a whole year!

Last year, Wednesday April 10th (no joke, you can look it up), Nicole Pyles decided to put together a photo prompt with 5 mandatory words as a way to meet and visit new blogs. She asked me to help co-host not long after and I gladly joined in. A year later, and it's still up and going, even picking up speed with new writers as we go.

And now, for the Anniversary post:

-------------------------------

WOW! It is amazing - we have reached the one year anniversary of Writer Wednesday Blog Hop.

Can you believe it has been one year?? I'm so happy to have come this far with this writing prompt. Most of all I'm just amazed and grateful that everyone has stuck through this whole year and has been devoted, creative, and inspirational.

A special thank you to my fabulous blog hop hosts - Tena, Leanne, and especially Carrie, who has been with me since the start. Plus, a HUGE thank you to all the writers who show off their creative skills week after week and continue to take part in this prompt.

And there is still a chance to throw your hat in the ring, because everyone who submits a writing prompt for this week's prompt, will be eligible to win, too. I'm so excited!

Now, for old times sake, we will be using the same prompt from last year. I want to see what everyone can come up with.

A to Z: B

Breaking in the puppy box.

You can't see the dogs so well, but the dark brindle is my pregnant boxer. The fawn is the daddy. They are due now, but until then, the boys are helping warm up the box for the new babies. :)

This will be my 5th litter. It's crazy to think that I've been doing this that long, since I only breed once every 2-3 years. My waiting list is already 5 people long and has been for a month. :) All previous puppy owners and their referrals. It's great when people love your dogs so much, not only do they come back, but they bring friends. :-)

A to Z: A

A is for Arlee Bird!!

Sending out a huge thank you to Arlee Bird, the originator of the A to Z Blogging Challenge. This is my first year participating as a blogger, but I've participated through reading in the past and I'm so happy and excited the challenge exists. :)

For the rest of the month I've settled on a -- erh -- theme of "A Story for Everything." Which is basically my blog. I'll have some flash fiction, some stories of my boys and my pups and whatever other stories pop into my mind as each letter approaches.

Thanks for stopping by, and I can't wait to meet new bloggers (well, new to me)! Here's to a great month.
